The olympic games were not always so friendly

The modern Olympics we see are often held up as a continuation of the first games. While the basic idea of sporting events is common to both, there is much that is different.

The Olympic Games Were Not Always So Friendly

The original Olympics were actually only one part of four games held during the year. The others were the Nemean, Isthmian and Pythian Games. The Olympics, however, were by far the most famous. These games derived their name from Olympia, were they were held.

The Olympics were first held in 776 BC. The games were part of a religious festival in honor of the Greek gods. They were held in the temple sanctuary of Olympia in Peloponnesus, which is located in southern Greece. The games celebrated sporting achievement and excellence as well as victory. In fact, victory was the only thing celebrated and it often stood in place of open warfare between various factions. There was no silver or bronze medal awarded.

Every year, the Olympics were held on the second full moon after the summer solstice. This would have put them in July or August of each year. The games lasted for roughly five days. A truce was declared for the up to three months prior to the games so contestants could heal from battles and prepare themselves.

The origin of the games has not been conclusively determined. Greek legend has it that Zeus, himself, started the games. Other legends have it that Herakles founded the games. A third view is that they games were created as a memorial to Pelops, a hero. Whatever the reason, the games have certain stood the test of time even if the original Greeks would not recognize them today.

The original Olympics had only one event – the foot race. Not until the 18th Olympiad were individual events such as wrestling, horse riding, discus and javelin throwing were added. At its height, over 40,000 people would pile into a stadium in Olympia to watch the events.

Given the peaceful tone of the modern Olympics, it is somewhat surprising the pankration was one of the most popular events of the early games. It was essentially a brawl between as many contestants as entered, fighting all at the same time, with the last man standing declared the winner. All Olympic events were restricted to men, to wit, women could only watch.

Ancient Greeks were very competitive, and the games were about the only no-war outlet for their passion. Given this basic truth, it is somewhat odd that the modern Olympics attempt to disdain politics and national rivalries.

Knowing what to look for in the best online education

The traditional way to receive an education, by attending what is known as a bricks-and-mortar institution, will always be a common and an accepted way to learn. There is something very tangible about going to a classroom and listening to a lecture given by an instructor standing in front of you, by interacting with peers, and by handing in tests and assignments in person. However, that is not always the most convenient way for a person to receive an education, especially a higher education from a college or university. Technology has afforded the opportunity for people to study and attend classes online. Though not a very recent development in education, it is a constantly improving and evolving device for learning that offers new choices and opportunities to many people who might not otherwise be able to receive a bachelor's, master's, or even doctorate degree, as well as supplement their careers with continuing education classes and certification programs. It is important to understand what it requires of the student, and what factors to look for in an educational institution, in order to receive the best possible online education.

The advantages of online education are many. There is a flexibility that comes with having round the clock access to coursework, online lectures, and study materials. There is the convenience of not having to commute to a classroom, or move into a dorm or near a specific campus. And there is the ability for an online student to be able to improve himself intellectually and professionally while at the same time working and enjoying family time. But, do not let these benefits fool you. The flexibility of online education does not make it an effortless endeavor. Students who know when they begin that they have to be resolute in their intentions earn the best online educations. Because of the extra time and effort that is required in order to succeed in the virtual classroom setting, online learning can be harder than traditional courses. An online student has to be dedicated and determined, as well as self-driven.

Often, online learning is an ideal situation for those who have been away from college for a while and have been out in the workforce. Maturity and life experience is often a big advantage when it comes to the demands that come with online education. For many older students, the online format has several advantages, both personal and professional. Online learning embraces the concepts of lifelong learning and self-improvement. The ready availability of the format allows these desires to be satisfied more easily than ever before. Taking advantage of online education also provides people with more career advancement opportunities, and helps them to compete professionally on a global scale. However, there are issues involved with returning to school, such as finding the time. That is why the convenience of an online education is often the best choice for an individual.

When seeking out colleges or universities that offer online educational programs, it is important to know what to look for. The best online educational programs come from colleges and universities that are fully accredited, and that are able to offer diversity in the curriculum and in the faculty that present it. It is vital that the faculty embrace the technology that is required for use in the virtual classroom format. It is important that faculty is willing and able to virtually communicate with students, whether it is to record a lecture or to communicate via email. It is also important for faculty to work with the technology in order to engage the students, which can be a challenge in an online classroom. It is also in their best interest professionally for faculty to be on par with technology in order to stay current themselves. In order to provide the best possible online educational experience, there must be a willingness to open the lines of communication on the part of an instructor as well as a student, in order to overcome the challenges that are brought on by the online classroom.

Though seemingly the easiest way to earn an education, online learning has a unique set of challenges. In addition to a great commitment of time and self-drive on the part of the student, online education requires the same commitment on the part of the educational institution and its faculty in order for online learning to reach its fullest potential. Online learning certainly offers flexibility and convenience for a student, especially one who has been in the workforce for a while. Being able to improve one's education and professional prospects while at the same time being able to maintain work and family responsibilities is one of the huge advantages of earning an online education. As long as a student is aware of the commitment required to be a successful online student, and finds an accredited program at a college or university that embraces the technology of the virtual classroom, then the student will receive the best in what online education currently has to offer.

How the online gambling ban helps al qaeda

Groups like Al Qaeda may very well be using online casinos to raise money for their global Jihad, but does banning online gambling really hurt them. The answer to this question is absolutely not, it actually help them.

The way it helps them is easy to understand. Most of the money spent on online gambling was going to publicly owned British operators, but the online gabling ban passed by the American Congress put a stop to that.

Out of fear of repercussions, as soon as the law was signed these companies sold off all operations dealing with the USA, but online gambling is still going on, so now who is getting the money.

The problem with the Gambling ban is that it does not stop people from gambling online it only stops legitimate operations from getting the money and less reputable ones start getting rich.

It is these small casinos that before went mostly unnoticed, that will now be bringing in the billions that will still be wagered online.

It is also these casinos that have the best chance of being a front for AL Qaeda.

Some so called experts will tell you that this is not true and that it was thru owning shares in these publicly traded online casinos that terrorists were making money, but if they were buying shares of online casinos I am sure they are buying shares of Microsoft and Google. So why not ban them as well?

But once again the American people seem to be getting lied to by their elected Government officials, and it is time that we the people fight back against the government.

It is time we as a nation start to question and demand answers that make sense from them, after all they work for us, don’t they?

If you are tired of all the lies, then there is something you can do.

Jim Nickogoski the creator of the http: myspace. com/angryonlinegambler has started a web page to help fight against the Online Gambling Ban, the page also offers an online petition so you can tell the government you do not agree and you demand they reverse this unfair and unjust law.

The only real way for the government to ensure that money made from online gambling is not going to fund terrorism is to work together with the online casinos to regulate the industry with licensing so you really know who is getting your money. Only then can we be sure none of our money is going to the people killing out troops and threatening the American way of life.

So make your voice herd, write letters to senators, congressmen and even the President. Tell them you disagree with the law and ask them for real proof that this law is really what is best for us.

In the end I am sure the law will be reversed, maybe one day the government will learn what most Americans already know a ban on something never works, even if the government showed proof that online casinos are run by terrorists people would still play in them, just because they are not supposed to be it is just human nature.

Chinese astrology explained

Are you confused about the meanings of Chinese astrology? Would you like to know more about this 5000 year old art?

Chinese astrology is based on the lunar calendar. As with astrology from other cultures, a horoscope is created using the position of the stars and planets for each of the twelve signs of the zodiac based on the year of birth.

The Twelve Chinese Signs

Rat

Rats are charming and attractive to the opposite sex. But despite outside appearances, they are restless and this sometimes comes across as aggressiveness. Rats are great with money, and love to pounce on an opportunity. They are also very generous to their friends. They love people and large gatherings and always have others around. They also run in many intimate circles and like to be involved in everything they can, leading them to sometimes attempt to do too much. They are good writers and speakers, and success comes easily to them.

Ox

Oxen are calm on the surface, but have hidden tempers. They are hard workers and are determined to the point of stubbornness. However, this makes them one of the most dependable signs. They are trustworthy, and easily move up at the office. If they don't watch out, they may not have much of a social life. They are not very adept at mind games, and can sometimes be led astray in romance. But once they find someone, they are steadfast and loyal.

Tiger

Tigers are energetic and unpredictable. Their wild side leads them to be the center of attention. They speak their mind and are always looking for the new party or next great idea. They are also very involved in giving their time and money to the causes they are passionate about. They are generous and honest. However, they are also rebels. They seek ideals and will rebel against a society they perceive as being in the wrong. They are emotional and impulsive, prone to romance as well as jealousy.

Rabbit

Rabbits are gracious and gentle. They adore quiet and peacefulness, and prefer a good book to a night on the town. Their sensitivity can lead to moodiness, but normally rabbits are great at keeping the peace. While they are quiet on the surface, rabbits are good at finding deals. They are sweet and can talk people into being on their side of an issue without argument. While they are cautious, they can also be friendly and inviting once they feel safe.

Dragon

Dragons have fire. They are full of life, and want to live life to the fullest. They are perfectionists and are extremely demanding of both themselves and others. They intimidate those who disagree with them, although they are very loyal to their friends. They can be stubborn, but they will let you know how they feel. They believe themselves to be strong and loveable, and they strive to motivate everyone to live up to their standards.

Snake

Snakes are mysterious, often charming the opposite sex. They are graceful, and tend towards all things grand and cultural. They are private tend to look inward for their self-esteem, and are superstitious about everything. They are not penny-pinchers, but always have money on hand. Snakes are jealous when they find a lover, and will turn cold almost on a whim.

Horse

Horses are generally friendly. They love being the center of attention, and will keep others enthralled by their quick wit. However, they have malleable alliances, and will have many short-lived romances and friendships. They enjoy the change, and lead lives full of adventure. They don't like being tied down, and love working out and spending time outdoors. They don't like sticking to a plan, and will often take on too much. They can be impatient with others whom they perceive as moving too slowly.

Sheep

Sheep are peaceful people. They empathize with others' pain, and are easy to talk to. They don't like to rush, and will break if pressured. They do not like harsh words, and love to be led gently. While they are passive, they are also patient, and generally they eventually get their way. They always remember their friends and families and give thoughtful gifts. They often worry about what others think, and tend too spend too much.

Monkey

Monkeys are intuitive and clever. They are hands-on problem solvers, and a great deal of self-confidence. They enjoy succeeding at difficult tasks, and don't need to be talked into attempting one. The source of their success is their great memory. They are hard workers, and don't care what others think of them. They don't usually have many friends, although their success does attract people to them.

Rooster

Roosters are romantics. They are perfectionists and dreamers at the same time. Quick to see detail, they always love a challenge, especially if at first glance it looks impossible. They take great pride in knowing all the details of a subject that interests them, and are thus great debaters. However, they will never admit to being wrong. They also tend to step in and try to solve others' problems, whether or not they have been invited to do so. They like to always stay busy, and will work for whatever they have their eye on.

Dog

Dogs are friendly and are always up front about their feelings. They are very family-oriented and are extremely loyal to their friends. They will fight for a cause they feel is just. They are not comfortable around extravagant wealth, and prefer a loving home regardless of social status. Once you befriend a dog, they will be by your side for life. They are monogamous, and tend to choose their lovers wisely. They work hard and play hard, and know when it is appropriate to be doing one or the other. They are good providers to those they love.

Pig

Pigs love a social life. They have many friends, and tend to stay out of heated discussions and all kinds of debates. It's not that they don't have an opinion; they simply love to party and don't want to risk ruining the fun. They are good listeners, but are sometimes gullible and can be taken advantage of easily. This can sometimes hurt them in relationships. They are trustworthy and dependable, and stick by their friends. They are generous to those they care about.

The Five Elements

There is another layer to Chinese astrology that is less well known than the Chinese signs. Chinese astrologers use a 60 year cycle, made up of five sets of the twelve signs. The five repetitions of the signs each correspond to a different element, adding more intricacy to the animal.

The five elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth.

In Chinese astrology, the elements are part of a cycle; one is not higher or better than another. In fact, they have a cyclical relationship, both in positive and negative ways, so that:

Water makes Wood

Wood makes Fire

Fire makes Earth

Earth makes Metal

Metal makes Water

and:

Water destroys Fire

Fire destroys Metal

Metal destroys Wood

Wood destroys Earth

Earth destroys Water

In addition, they can be openly aggressive and hostile:

Water resists Fire

Fire resists Metal

Metal resists Wood

Wood resists Earth

Earth resists Water

So now you know the basics of Chinese Astrology. Enjoy exploring your Chinese sign!

Michigan schools shore up a failing school system

While other states and school districts are searching for progressive and innovative methods to improve student achievement and graduation rates, the Michigan Schools continue to shore up the current failing system, according to The Detroit News. Rather than improving the current system, teachers’ unions act as oversight bullies, the Michigan schools appear to follow their dictates, and legislators just keep pouring money into the Michigan schools, while complaining that funds are limited.

First, money is not the issue. While inflation has risen at a rate of 21 percent, funding for the Michigan schools has risen by of 71 percent. The state legislature funds the Michigan schools annually at the tune of $13 billion, and Michigan schools teachers are among the highest paid educators in the United States.

The problem with the Michigan schools current system is that they are not working hard enough to improve it for the children. They have some excellent educators that work hard for their schools, putting every effort into helping students excel under the current policies and resources. The community should be very grateful for their dedication. Yet, the Michigan schools are still operating under old standards — pump more money into teacher benefits (for which teachers’ unions also benefit), rather than the students.

The state recently approved an increase in the per student funding rate that should be going toward improving student achievement. Yet almost the entire $216 per student rate is underwriting healthcare and retirement costs for Michigan schools employees, according to the newspaper.

With a statewide dropout rate of nearly 25 percent (some districts in Metro Detroit are as high as 60 percent), Michigan schools administrators need to do some serious housecleaning on the current system. When the newspaper surveyed students and their parents, it found that only 30 percent of parents insist their children remain in school. Only 12 percent of students found coursework challenging; 83 percent believe that their coursework is not relevant.

Teachers who speak up or attempt to effect change in the current Michigan schools system are shutdown by the strong, organized and vocal teachers’ unions and administrators of the Michigan schools. They both seem to like things as they are.

Some progressive teachers have publicly recommended that school grade levels be reorganized; the current pay system for teachers be replaced with pay-for-performance measures; and parents be allowed to send their children to the schools of their choice (charter, public, private or home school) — as is done in many states. The teachers’ unions quickly silenced these progressives.

The teachers’ unions give no particular evidence as to why these recommendations should not be considered, nor do they offer any solutions, except for their recent proposal — guaranteed yearly pay raises for teachers. They are aggressively pushing for the state legislature to write an amendment into the state constitution that guarantees funding for annual teacher pay raises. Where is the accountability?

With all the problems of student achievement, it is time the Michigan schools stop catering to the teachers’ unions and focus on improving student achievement.
